Myths about Dreaming and Sleeping

Hi everyone!

I was trying to think of what to write about today and kept coming up with the question: What do people think about dreams? I realized how many myths and superstitions there really are out there and I wanted to clarify a few of them. (Some of these, I used to believe myself.)

The most commonly heard myth about dreams is that some people don’t even dream period.

But the truth is that all people dream. Ninety percent of our dreams are lost in the first ten minutes of waking, at least for most people. So when someone says they don’t dream, what they actually should be saying is they never remember their dreams, because they do in fact dream.

Another superstition about dreams is that if you tell someone your dream before breakfast it is bad luck.

I’m not sure about the “bad luck” part of that, but based on the fact above that we lose so much of our dreams it would actually be beneficial to tell someone your dream. Doing so would help you remember your dreams and would keep you out of the large group of people who think they don’t dream.  If you are a superstitious person and don’t feel like telling someone your dream before breakfast, you could always start a dream journal and write it down.

One more myth about dreams is that dream interpretation is the same for everyone.

This is not true. Though there are a lot of symbols in dreams that have a general meaning to them and can help to decipher some of the dream. There is always an underlying message your subconscious is trying to tell you that is specific to just you. But, dream interpretation is still an interesting way to figure out a majority of your dream.

Here a few more myths that are commonly heard, but are not true at all:

-Dreams mean nothing.

-My dreams are only about the other people in them (for example, if you dream about a friend, that dream’s meaning is about the friend and not you).

– If you see an unfamiliar face in a dream you have never met them before.
